Roger preceded him in death in 2004. His mother, Lilah survives him, residing in San Marino, California.

At the age of 6, Brett moved with his parents to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he attended public school in Hopkins. He later attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin, graduating with a degree in hotel management and hospitality.

During his extensive career, Brett managed hotels in Minneapolis, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, and in 1983 became the manager of the newly constructed Embassy Suites Hotel in Green Bay, Wisconsin, which he managed for 17 years. Among his many accomplishments in Green Bay, he was responsible for bringing Celebrate AmericaFest to the downtown area for the July 4th annual celebration. He also was instrumental in the development and construction of the downtown convention center adjacent to the former Embassy Suites Hotel. In 2000, Brett made a significant career change in purchasing, along with his family, Indianhead Mountain Ski Resort in Wakefield, Michigan. Brett owned and managed the resort for seven years.

Brett had two daughters with his former wife, Brittany and Brooke Stangeland. Brittany preceded her father in death in a tragic automobile accident in 1996. Brett is survived by his daughter, Brooke, of Pound Ridge, New York, and her fiancé Richard Portale; his grandson, Hudson Shaw Portale; his mother, Lilah; his sister and brother-in-law, Cyndi and Dave Olsen, of Laguna Niguel, California; his brother and sister-in-law, Brad and Colleen Stangeland, of Eugene, Oregon; two nephews, Josh (Destiny) Meili, of San Clemente California, Jason Meili of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a niece, Tara Murff and her husband Odeck Ariawan of Bali, Indonesia; and a great niece, Paisley Meili.

Brett retired in California for several years before moving back to Green Bay in 2017. Brett found great joy in his kitchen cooking beautiful food and entertaining. He loved the woods and his many fishing and hunting trips with his father, brothers, and friends.  He was a die-hard Packers fan and made sure his grandson had “Packer” attire upon birth. His soft and gentle spirit will be missed and held close to all who loved him.
