Elizabeth “Betty” Ellen Speth, age 91, died on Thursday, July 27, 2017. She was born November 7, 1925, at Stonehurst, Town of Sharon in Portage County, the daughter of Martin and Ellen (Simonis) Steffanus.

Betty graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Stevens Point. She continued her education at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Milwaukee receiving her RN degree in 1947. On June 7, 1948, she married John Speth. They lived in Green Bay since 1956, and were some of the earliest members of St. Bernard Parish.  Elizabeth enjoyed being with people in her work as a nurse, religion class teacher, den mother, and Girl Scout leader.  Her favorite hobbies were gardening, reading and playing cards, especially bridge.

Betty considered her family her greatest blessing. She is survived by her six children: David (Sherry) Speth, Sheboygan Falls; Margaret (Speth) Clay, Green Bay; Andrew (Janet) Speth, Middleton; Joan (Fred) Budde, Madison; Mary Hammond, Green Bay; and Thomas (Sheila) Speth, Cincinnati, OH; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a seventh due this year.  She is further survived by two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and her dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Speth; two brothers, Charles and Wilfred Steffanus; four sisters, Jeanne Rogers, Melanie Hielsberg, Avis Wysocki, and Rose Skibba.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 29, 2017, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2040 Hillside Lane.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Mark VanderSteeg officiating. Burial will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Betty’s family extend their gratitude to thank the staff of Alpha Senior Care in Suamico for their dedication and service; and to the staff of Heartland Hospice who assisted and comforted Betty and her family through this journey. One of the many lessons Mom taught us was that you are never too old to meet a new friend. Thanks and blessings to Betty LeGrave for your friendship in this last year of Mom’s life.
