John was a 1966 graduate of Premontre, where he was a three-sport star in football, basketball and track. He went on to play at St. Norbert College as a quarterback and defensive back. John started his coaching career as the freshman coach at Premontre in 1971 before being promoted to a varsity assistant position under Ron Miller in 1974. He then served as the defensive coordinator for Dick Hietpas from 1976 to 1983, helping Premontre win the 1978 WISAA state title. John left after the 1983 season to help coach Edison Middle School in its first year, before Ken Flaten hired him as the head coach at Premontre a few years later. He was picked to lead the newly formed Notre Dame Academy in 1990 after Premontre, Abbot Pennings and Saint Joseph’s Academy merged.

John retired as football coach at Notre Dame Academy in November after 31 seasons. He also was an accomplished track and field coach at the school, winning the boys WIAA Division 2 title in 2002, runner up in 2011 and the girls WIAA Division 2 state title in 2010.

He was at Premontre his first four years and Notre Dame Academy for the last 27. He won 225 games and led his team to two WIAA Division 3 state titles and four title appearances since the Tritons joined the association in 2000. Before that, he went to four WISAA state title games and won the Division 1 championship in 1992. John was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004.
