Lt. Colonel Bernard James Lawler, 97, USAF (retired), Green Bay, died January 11, 2012. Ben was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, after which he served in Warner Robins Georgia,Wiesbaden Germany, and Omaha Nebraska. Son of Mayme (Barta) and Patrick Henry (P. H.) Lawler, Ben was born at home on South Webster Avenue in Green Bay on January 9, 1915. A graduate of St.Norbert College, he lived in Green Bay until he joined the military. On February 17, 1942, he married Mary Margaret Coleman, “the love of my life”, who preceded him in death on December 6, 2001. Their children are Mary Ann Lawler of Arlington VA, Susan Jacquet of Richmond CA, and Michael Barta Lawler of Vernon Hills IL.
After retiring from the military, Ben moved back to Green Bay and worked 15 years as Work Adjustment Coordinator for the Curative Rehabilitation Center.
A lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, Ben was a Fourth Degree Grand Knight. He was also an active member of the Retired Officers Association, the Serra Club, and the Lions Club.
Known as “BenByGeorge” to his cyberkin, Ben enjoyed golf, cribbage, fishing, spending time up north in Tipler WI, and watching the Packers. But his real passion was jogging, which he began regularly in the 1960s and continued until he was 91.
In addition to his children, Ben is survived by grandchildren, Christine Olson, Joe Jacquet, Simin Khalatbari, Melody Khalatbari Eaton, Erin Lawler-Friedman, Heather Sigmon, and Jim Khalatbari; great grandchildren, Clinton, Kaya, Lily, Logan, Abigail, Aiden, Hannah, Nora, Jackson, Coleman, and Neve; his sister Patricia Santy and brother Patrick (PJ) Lawler and many, many nieces and nephews.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Francis, David, Mary (Dennisen), Betty (Biemeret), Edward, and Pauline (Hessel).
Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 1 to 5 p.m. Parish wake service 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Monday, Jan. 16 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth St., from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Dane Radecki, O.Praem, officiating. Burial in the Allouez Catholic Cemetery. The family suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
