Alfred L. "Dow" Maes, 90, Green Bay died Friday Sept. 19, 2008, at Santa Maria Nursing Home. He was born in Green Bay Feb. 12, 1918 to Anna Warden Maes and Alfred Maes.
Al was known in Green Bay as "Mr. Baseball". His love for baseball started in the back room of his parent´s grocery store as a little guy when his dad caught him using fresh eggs for baseballs.
After playing high school baseball, Al played first base with the Thomas Drug team for several years. After World War II, Al coached local American Legion teams for many years, and in 1958-59, he served as business manager for the Green Bay Blue Jays, a Dodger farm club.
He maintained lifelong relationships with many of the players he met through baseball.
Al graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1936, then enrolled at University of Wisconsin- Madison in Journalism. He entered military service in June, 1942, and landed in Normandy on D-Day. His unit had advanced farthest east to the Enns River when the war ended. He earned the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his exemplary service.
Al worked in sales for many years, and met the love of his life, Millie Doan Hickok, when she served as secretary for the Green Bay Blue Jays. They married in 1973, and lived in Al´s family home on Clay Street throughout their marriage.
Al is survived by three step-children; Ralph (Diane) Hickok, New Bedford, MA; Beth (Louis) Hickok Weier , De Pere; Ellen (Roy) Hickok Wall, Shawano; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Friends may call at St. John the Evangelist Church, 413 St. John St. on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Guy Blair officiating, followed by a military burial at Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Green Bay.
