Joseph Gordon Kane, 92, Green Bay, died with his family by his side on Sunday afternoon, August 23, 2009 at a local nursing home. He was born August 30, 1916 in the town of Pittsfield to the late Alex and Carrie (Nolan) Kane. Gordon married Margaret Van Den Heuvel on February 5, 1946 at St. Willebrord Church.
Gordon served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army stationed in Europe. He spent most of his career as a milkman employed by Shadow Lawn Dairy. In his later years he worked as custodian at St. Mary of the Angels School. He was also a member of St. Mary of the Angels parish, a member of the Men’s Club and a former member of Kiwanis International. Gordon was known for his easy smile and quick wit. He enjoyed home remodeling and repairs including the conversion of a former dairy into the home he and Margaret shared for 58 years. He also enjoyed reading and playing Schafkopf with their couples’ club. He was a lifelong Packers fan.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret; six children, Patrick (Barbara) O’Kane, Boston area, and their children, Katie O’Kane and Kelly O’Kane; Mary (James) Kabacinski, Appleton; James (Elaine) Kane, Green Bay and their children, Carrie Lax, Lana (Jason) Cheslock and Angela (Bennett) Notz; Denis Kane, Pittsburgh; William (Marlene) Kane, De Pere, and Bill’s children, Kendra and Joseph (Abbey) Kane and Marlene’s children, Ryan (Sara), Rachel, Rebecca; and Richard (Ann) Kane, Green Bay, and their children, Christopher (Nicole) Kane, Benjamin Kane and Jennifer Kane; five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Lester Kane, two sisters, Celeste Kane and Marie Kane, one grandson, Kevin Kabacinski and one cousin Cliff Kane.
Friends may call at St. Mary of the Angels Church, corner of Cass St. and Irwin Ave. on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Tom Wojciechowski, OFM officiating. Burial in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Duck Creek.
Gordon’s family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff at Bornemann’s Nursing Home and Unity Hospice for their care and concern.
