Raymond E. “Ray” Wertel, 58, of Bellevue died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at his home with his family at his side. Ray was born June 6, 1951 in Green Bay, the son of the late Benedict S. and Evelyn C. (Budzban) Wertel and was a graduate of Denmark High School. He married Joan Allen on May 6, 1972. Ray served in the Army National Guard, Spec 5 – Medical Unit from 1971 – 1977. He was employed as a facilities technician at Green Bay Public Schools, at Schreiber Foods for 28 years, an Alumni member of the Preble Quarterback Club and a minister of hospitality at St. Bernard’s Parish. Ray was also a member of the PLAV Post # 186 and a Red Cross blood donor. He was a firm believer in any form of continued education, be it trades, craftsmanship, horticulture or technical. Ray was faithful in the praying of the rosary and did so by frequently visiting the SSCM Faith Community, Robinsonville Chapel and St. Bernard Parish. Survivors include his wife Joan, Bellevue; two sons, Michael E. (Christy) Wertel, Green Bay and Scott J. (Holly) Wertel, Apache Junction, AZ; four grandchildren Mason, Nathaniel, Brady and Natalie; two brothers Robert (Patricia) Wertel, Green Bay and Richard (Germaine) Wertel, Denmark; one sister Roxanne (Mark) DeBaker, Denmark; one brother-in-law James (Wendy) Allen, Green Bay; four sisters-in-law Susan (Robert) VandenBush, Carol Allen, Diane (Dennis) Gaestel and Jean (Gerald) Rasmussen, all of Green Bay, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his father-in-law Joseph Allen. Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 from 4 – 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2040 Hillside Lane. There will be a parish wake service 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Rev. David Pleier officiating. Entombment in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum. Online condolences may be expressed at www.prokowall.com. A memorial in Ray’s name is being established. Ray’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to their family and friends for their prayers, care and concern.
