Beatrice A. (Knedle)Halfpap, 89, passed away Monday, July 12, 2010 at the Jack and Engrid Meng Hospice Facility, following a brief stay. Beatrice was born Oct. 26, 1920 in Norman, WI to the late, Albert and Anna (Ourada) Knedle. Bea was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy (Notre Dame) and Badger Business College. She enlisted in the U.S. Army (WACS) August of 1943, and was discharged in November of 1945. Bea married Donald Halfpap, who she met while in service, in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Bea was one of the first women to enlist in the Woman’s Army Corps. She was stationed on the coast at Petaluma, California. Her company was a radio intercept group that intercepted messages sent between Japanese soldiers and their commanders. She intercepted the messages in Morse Code and they would then be de-coded using the information to save lives.
Bea was employed at Wemple Advertising for many years, retiring in 1983. Bea and her husband spent many weekends at their cabin in Long Lake where Don established Wildwood Realty. Bea was also a licensed real estate agent. Her delight was her ability to purchase and repair old estate jewelry, which she then sold at craft fairs. Bea was a member of the Howard Suamico VFW and the American Legion. She was also a member of St. Joseph Parish.
She is survived by one brother and two sisters-in-law, Richard (Dick) and Ann Knedle, Howard; Rosemary Knedle, Green Bay; seven nieces: Jeanne Libert, who was a special niece as well as Bea’s caregiver, Debra (Dan) Brunnquell, Paula (David) Akin, Julie (Bryan) Radtke, Anne Martin and her fiancée Jerard Nighorn, Dr. Mary Ellen (Peter) Murray, and Katie Knedle. She is also survived by a very special friend of long standing, Linda Dickie; many cousins, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her brother Matt Knedle, and her nephew Paul Knedle.
