Esther (Polasik) Kulhanek, 84, Bellevue resident, died June 20, 2010, of complications due to a courageous 10-year battle with Alzheimers, with her family by her side. She was born May 14, 1926 in Cudahy, WI to the late Joseph and Rose (Koscielniak) Kubik. Esther married Henry Polasik, May 29, 1948 at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in the town of Eaton. He preceded her in death October 30, 1986. She then married Elmer Kulhanek on May 9, 1990 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Pine Grove. Esther and Hank owned and operated Hank’s Bar from 1957 until 1966. During those years they became known for their “Friday Fish Fry”. She was employed at Country Kitchen on Green Bay’s East Side until her retirement. Esther enjoyed bowling, loved working in the yard, planting flowers and just being outside. She also enjoyed vacationing with Elmer in her retirement. Esther especially enjoyed polka music and dancing with family and friends. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband Elmer Kulhanek, Denmark; her son, Patrick (Connie) Polasik, Green Bay and her daughter, Theresa (T.J.) Zaffke, Green Bay; 3 grandchildren, Melanie and Shanie Polasik and Erin Polasik (fiancée Andy Aschenbrenner); 2 great grandchildren, Jasmine and Na’imah Polasik. She is also survived by 3 brothers, Frank Kubik, Palmyra; Larry (Dorothy) Kubik, Cudahy; Ted (Carol) Kubik, Milwaukee; 1 sister, Sylvia Kuhnke, Milwaukee; 3 sisters-in-law, Delores (Al) Gerczak, Green Bay; Loretta Gilling, Neenah; Elsie (Tony) Gierczak, Green Bay; Elmer’s children, Merle (Pat) Kulhanek, Cindy (Donald) Shimon, Ruth (Leonard) Bertrand; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.. Parish Prayer Service 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 3425 Willow Road after 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Ron Belitz officiating. Entombment at Nicolet Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be sent to Esther’s family at www.prokowall.com.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy a memorial fund has been established in Esther’s name.
Esther’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of Bornemann’s Nursing Home for all the care and compassion shown to Esther and her family; and to all the other friends and relatives who offered their help and support during this difficult time.
