Donald “Donny” V. Wertel, 71, Green Bay, formerly of Denmark, went home to be with the Lord on March 20, 2010. He was born in the Town of Poland on April 11, 1938 to the late Vincent and Stella (Pasterski) Wertel. He served in the United States Army from 1960-1963. Donny was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a Eucharistic Minister. He spent most of his life farming and later was employed by McKeefry and Sons as a truck driver. Donny enjoyed bird watching, feeding the birds and squirrels, and was actively involved in his grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Darlene (Brisson) Wertel; four children: Vincent Wertel, Denmark, John (Jane) Wertel, Denmark, Jerry (Wendy) Wertel, St. Louis, MO; Mary Jane Wertel and special friend Justin, Grayslake, IL; eight grandchildren: Jason, Kristi, Vinnie, Gabe, Mallory, Dylan, John Anthony, and Kayden. He is also survived by two brothers, Nicky Wertel and Joey Wertel, Denmark; his Godmother, Rose (Wertel) Vandenbush; and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Brisson, Green Bay. He is further survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Mitchell Brisson.
Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at All Saints Church in Denmark from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. at the church with Rev. Donny will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. A strong man with a very gentle soul.
