Cecelia Bates

Born in Fond Du Lac, WI on Jan 07, 1916

Died on Mar 04, 2008 and resided in Village of Allouez, WI

Cecelia Agnes Winkel Bates, 92, Green Bay, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 after a brief illness. Cecilia was a life-long resident of Green Bay growing up on Porlier Street near Astor Park. In her youth, she was a part-time lingerie model at Prange´s Department Store, a short-time waitress at Kaap´s Restaurant, and a one-time winner of a Myrna Loy look-alike contest. Cecelia married John Wakefield Bates in 1945 and they remained constant companions until John´s passing on March 4, 2003. They were married for 58 years. A fierce defender of her children, it was best not to come between Cecilia and her cubs. In their later years, Cecilia and John passed many wonderful days fishing the lakes of northern Wisconsin. When that was now longer possible, they moved to the McCormick Home. Cecelia most recently resided at the Village Gardens. Cecelia exhibited a zest for life and an appreciation for a good joke that lasted until very nearly the end of her days. She persisted in the firm belief that nearly anything could be made better with a good martini. Cecelia will be missed by those who survive her, her son, Richard (Jack) and Jean Bates, Silver Cliff, Wis.; her daughter, Linda Bates, Milwaukee, Wis.; her son, Stephen and Mary Bates, Ann Arbor, Mich.; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Also surviving is a brother, Francis Winkel of Wis. Friends may call at the McCormick Memorial Home, 212 Iroquois Ave., Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Funeral service 10:30 am. At the McCormick home with Sr. Melanie Maczka, SSC officiating. Entombment in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. Online condolences may be sent to Cecelia´s family at www.prokowall.com.
