Gertrude “Gertie” M. Wagner, 93, Green Bay passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 8, 2010 in Strum, Wisconsin. Gert was born on November 2, 1916 in Chassell Michigan to the late August and Mary (Pertula) Sauvola. Gert moved to Green Bay in 1944 where she met her future husband. She married Glenn M. “Wags” Wagner on Thanksgiving Day 1949. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2000. Gertie was employed with Schilling Fish Company in Green Bay for 8 years and later worked for over 20 years at School Food Services. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Green Bay. Gertie was a sweet, generous and loving woman even though she always referred to herself as a “Tough Old Finn”. She always gave lots of love to her family and friends and worked very hard to care for her family. She had a very humble nature and a beautiful smile. Wags always referred to her as “an Angel”. She enjoyed both her flower garden and her veggie garden. People driving by would stop to look at her flowers. Every fall she enjoyed canning and preserving her vegetables. Watching and feeding wild birds in her yard gave her great pleasure. She also loved doing her own perch fries. Wags would catch the fish and Gertie would clean and fry them. Were they ever good! Gertie was also an avid Brewers fan and would often go to bed at night listening to the Brewers games. She will be sadly missed by her children Glenda (Eric) Drimmer, San Diego, Gloria (Paul) Duerst, Eleva, WI, Eileen (Paul) Rasmussen, Cedarburg WI, four grandchildren David, Jesse, Joshua and Alyssa as well many other relatives and friends. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Glenn, her sister Effie Sauvola Walls and brother Melvin Sauvola.
